Carbon Assessment Method

HOME > How to Apply > Carbon Assessment Method

Most of the GHG generated from construction products are emitted from raw material acquisition, production process, and transportation. The quantification and reporting of the carbon footprint of products (CFP) under this Certification is thus based on a “cradle-to-site” approach, covering all GHG emissions and removals of the product arising from raw material acquisition to the border of Hong Kong.

The development of the Certification was based on the ISO14025:2006 “Environmental Labels and Declarations - Type III Environmental Declarations - Principles and Procedures”. The quantification and reporting of the CFP under the Certification shall comply with the ISO14067:2013 “Greenhouse Gases – Carbon Footprint of Products – Requirements and Guidelines for Quantification and Communication”. In accordance with ISO14067:2013, the CFP study shall include the four phases of life cycle assessment (LCA), i.e. goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory (LCI) analysis, life cycle impact assessment (LCIA), and life cycle interpretation.

CIC has developed Assessment Guides (the “Guide”) to detail the principles and requirements for the quantification and reporting of the CFP under the Certification. Together with the CFP Quantification Tool, the Guides shall be used by Certified Carbon Auditors (CCAs) and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Validation and Verification Bodies (VVBs) to conduct carbon auditing and reporting, as well as verification. The Guide sets out the product category rules (PCR) and the benchmark for labelling low carbon products under the Certification.
